Welcome Poughkeepsie High School Rowing Alumni !!

It all began Jan 5, 1950. It was the first meeting of the PHS Rowing Team, the Blue Oarsman. Sam Kalloch was the athletic director, Joe Ryan and George Englehardt were coaching. There were 67 students, one rowing machine and no boats yet. By April 4, 1950 the Poughkeepsie New Yorker pictured George Day, Dave Smith, Bob Denhardt, Bob Becker, and Gil Bastian in a four oared gig for PHS's first time ever on the water, at the Wappingers creek. On May 6th they were ready to race Yale freshman. And,on May 13th participated in the first Schoolboy Regatta and the first Mid-Hudson Invitationals a week later. Today, rowing continues to influence many young people's lives and their families at Poughkeepsie Highschool.
